BUCC’s Ada Lovelace Mindstorm 1.0

BRAC University Computer Club (BUCC) successfully hosted Ada Lovelace Mindstorm 1.0 on March 13, 2025, celebrating International Women’s Day by encouraging female students to think innovatively and analytically. The event featured chief guest Dr. Sadia Hamid Kazi, keynote speaker Dr. Rubana Ahmed, and several esteemed judges and speakers.

The competition began on March 10, where over 150 participants took part in an analytical problem-solving round, leading to 15 finalists. In the final round, participants presented ideas on “Technological Solutions for Women’s Safety in Bangladesh.” Judges evaluated ideas ranging from AI-integrated apps to discreet safety devices.

After the presentations, the judges finalized the results, and the Prize Giving Ceremony took place. Jannatul Ferdous Fabin became the Champion for her discreet device Advoy. Maisha Tasnim and Elma Tawrat secured First and Second Runners-Up, while Dooty Aranny and Shudeepta Roy Mou received Honorable Mentions.

The event ended with a photo session, recognizing the efforts of participants, organizers, and volunteers, marking a milestone as BUCC’s first-ever all-female ideathon.

BUCC Majles-e-Iftar 2025

On 8th March 2025, the BRAC University Computer Club (BUCC) hosted its annual Majles-E-Iftar at our very own university campus, bringing together a vibrant mix of current members, esteemed alumni, and respected faculty members, the people who once were the core part of the club. The event was a heartfelt celebration of unity and spirituality during the holy month of Ramadan, highlighting the warmth and spirit of friendliness that defines the BUCC community. 

The event began with everyone introducing themselves, sparking conversations between members across different departments and times. They talked about ideas and cherished all the memories and new beginnings.  It set the tone for an evening filled with meaningful connections and shared memories. About 150 current BUCC members attended the event, joined by many alumni who returned to relive their cherished moments with the club and reconnect with old friends alongside with the bonding of love that they always have with the club and its people. And just like every year, the members from all the departments worked together to make this event successful. From the decoration to food distribution everything was perfectly organized and well planned ensuring everyone is having an amazing time. 

As the Azan recited, everyone broke their fast together at the BUCC cafe, creating a warm, communal dining experience. Following iftar and prayers, the gathering continued with laughter, stories, and group photos that captured the spirit of togetherness.

The Majlish-E-Iftar is more than just an annual tradition is a celebration of legacy, belonging, and the ever-growing BUCC family. It bridges generations, fostering lasting bonds among members, past and present. Through this festive evening, new memories were created while old ones were fondly revisited, reinforcing the club’s spirit of collaboration and unity.

I don’t consider myself an anime person, but I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing a few iconic anime films that have truly left me in awe. Howl’s Moving Castle, featuring the voice of a live-action Batman actor (Christian Bale) in the English dub, follows Sophie, a young woman cursed by a witch. As her story unfolds, her age fluctuates by mirroring her self-esteem and self-discovery. The concept of the movie and its amazing showcase of animation sparked my admiration for “Studio Ghibli”. Then again My Neighbor Totoro felt like a gentle, whimsical daydream that reminded me of the simple magic in everyday moments. And Only Yesterday struck a deep chord with its quiet, reflective storytelling—capturing the bittersweet beauty of growing up, memory, and finding meaning in ordinary life.

Fast forward to this week, I was taken aback by the sudden surge of AI-generated Ghibli-style art flooding the internet. However, another headline emerged, strongly condemning the trend of AI-generated Ghibli-style art. Generative AI, after all, doesn’t store images in the traditional sense however, it learns from massive datasets, identifying patterns to replicate artistic styles. When exposed to Miyazaki’s art, AI doesn’t truly “understand” it; it merely mimics the ghibliness of his work. This seems fascinating since we can just incorporate different art styles. However, the real problem arises when we think of it from the POV of an artist whose creative vision just got reduced to a formula that AI can replicate in seconds.

One key takeaway is that copyright laws don’t protect ideas but rather protect the specific expressions that artists create. For instance, copyright laws are limited to music genres. This legal loophole makes AI-generated art a grey area raising ethical concerns about artistic creativity. Should an artist’s years of craftsmanship be distilled into an algorithm? Let’s ask ourselves, where do we draw the line between inspiration and imitation? 

Switching Realities: A Next-Gen Leap at a Premium Price

After almost a decade, the Nintendo Switch 2 will finally hit the market this year on June 5th. The Nintendo Switch was a massive hit, with 150 million sold worldwide. Consequently, the arrival of the Switch 2 was no surprise. The next generation of the Switch shows considerable improvement over its last iteration, with 4K support, HDR, 256 GB of storage, 120 FPS, and more. We all know that increased performance generally equates to increased price, and it's no different for the Nintendo Switch 2. The console will cost USD 449.99 and USD 499.99 for the Nintendo Switch 2 + Mario Kart World Bundle. It will launch with an impressive lineup including Kirby Air Riders, enhanced editions of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, Assassin's Creed Mirage, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, Halo: The Master Chief Collection, Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Elden Ring, and the mysterious new title The Duskbloods. The revealed price is fair considering the numerous improvements it brought over its last generation. However, the concern was the $80 price tag for the next generation of Switch games. According to reports, the Switch 2 software will cost $80, and their physical editions will cost $10 more. Most Nintendo fans are calling these prices outright insane. Nintendo is one of the biggest names in the video games industry, and their decision to increase the prices will send waves throughout the industry, which may spell regret for us consumers. The predictions of Grand Theft Auto VI releasing on a $100 price tag may not be far from reality anymore. And other publishers and developers will soon follow suit and set the industry standard prices at $80. Enjoying video games should be accessible for everyone, but prices like this are painting a bleak future for everyone. If things progress accordingly, playing video games will soon become a luxury for elite society.

Stick to RTX 4000 series or is 5000 the one for you?

One thing that the pc enthusiasts love and hype every time that it comes out is the GPU series and models. With the RTX 5000 series coming out, one thing you might ask yourself is, should you upgrade or stick to your 4000 series GPU? Well, let's find out. 

The RTX 5000 series brings out some major upgrades from the 4000 series. That includes higher VRAM, AI Frame Generation, power efficiency, and an upgrade to DLSS 4.0. DLSS upscales with the help of AI as Nvidia’s neural network enhances the image quality. With the 5th-generation Tensor Cores, the GPUs are twice as fast as the 4000 series.

However, should you really upgrade? The 5000 series doubles the performance but only with the DLSS 4.0 support in comparison to the 4000 series’ DLSS 3.0. Without it, the performance upgrade is roughly 10-20%. The pricing is also rapidly increased as the RTX 4090 costs 1,599$ whereas the 5090 is set at 1,999$. Another thing to consider is, that the RTX 5000 series requires a Gen 5.0 motherboard. According to PirateSoftware, a YouTuber, and an indie game dev speculated that while scaling up the resolution & generating 3 fake frames on the RX 5000 series might improve visuals in some contexts, it may not bring significant value in competitive FPS games. This is because it could potentially generate false frames, which may lead to players missing crucial shots, such as a headshot. The AI-generated hallucinative frames might be better for open-world games but devastating for competitive platforms.

The RTX 4000 series performed greatly with DLSS 3.0 which had AI features. If you are not working with data science, LLM/AI, or a gamer who requires 144+ FPS on ultra settings, is a 10-20% performance boost worth almost 400$ for you? On a good note, the 5000 series is definitely a big upgrade from the 3000 or the older series.

Red Dead Redemption 2: A Wild West Masterpiece

Red Dead Redemption 2 is an amazing open-world, third-person shooter (optionally a first-person shooter) where you play as a gunslinger outlaw trying to escape from an increasingly outlaw-less world. Here Arthur is such a character, everyone is gonna love. This game shares many similarities with games like Fallout: New Vegas, Fallout 4, and GTA 5, so I would strongly recommend it to fans of those games.

Despite being called “Red Dead Redemption 2”, this game takes place before the events of the first “Red Dead Redemption”.It is mainly a challenging lifestyle of a cowboy who always fights. The protagonist of the first game, John Marston, makes a return in the game as a side character, as an outlaw by the name of Arthur Morgan takes center stage as the new main playable character. The early stages of the game even involve Morgan searching for and saving Marston from a pack of wolves, seemingly passing the baton on to his fellow gang member as the new main protagonist of the game.

Red Dead Redemption 2 feels very much like a Grand Theft Auto game set in the Wild West (as Rockstar Games are the creators of both series), drawing some aspects such as the GTA mini-map radar, similar horse riding mechanics to the GTA driving mechanics, and similar gun combat mechanics. The game also deviates far enough away from this GTA template to truly feel like its own separate game.

GTA VI Hint Sparks Anticipation for Next Gaming Revolution

Grand Theft Auto aka GTA is one of the most popular and widely loved video game franchises of all time, holding countless records since the release of its first version in 1997. With a unique theme and gameplay, it quickly stood out and became iconic. For many of us who grew up playing PC games; GTA holds a special place that is deeply tied to childhood memories. Over time, several versions of GTA were released, and the studio evolved from DMA Design to Rockstar North. As a multiplatform game, it remains hugely popular and especially among those who use gaming as a form of stress relief. In this era of booming E-sports, GTA has stayed relevant and beloved.

GTA V, released in 2013, is still the best-selling PC game of all time. It holds many records, including being the highest-rated game on eighth-generation consoles and the fastest to gross $1 billion, as noted in Guinness World Records. As time passed with no update on a new version fans grew impatient for GTA VI. Finally, Rockstar Games marked its 25th anniversary with a surprise; announcing the trailer of GTA VI on Facebook. Though the trailer was intended as a Christmas gift, leaks across social media led to an earlier release on December 5, instantly creating massive hype.The trailer hints at a Miami-based setting, much like the iconic GTA Vice City. For the first time in GTA history, a female protagonist named Lucia will be introduced. Speculation of a second lead character has also raised questions about potential two-player gameplay. Other details like social media references, glimpses of missions, and the track “Love is a Long Road” have sparked more curiosity.

Within just 15 hours, the trailer gained 68 million views, breaking records. As fans eagerly await the 2025 release, excitement continues to grow. Will Rockstar deliver another groundbreaking hit or leave fans underwhelmed after such a long wait? Only time will reveal the surprise they’ve been holding back.

Are you sick of ads and being violated of your privacy? I bet you are; who wouldn’t be? Today I’ll talk about how our data is being stolen and how we can prevent this from happening.

In today’s world ‘Data’ is priceless and most of us don’t even realize that it’s being stolen from us. Have you ever noticed that when you google something online and the next moment you’re scrolling through social media and certain ads pop up that you are interested in? Happens to everyone. It’s because you’ve permitted some services or apps to monitor your data. And the worst thing is you didn’t even realize when those permissions were given to them and for most individuals, it’s a hassle to go through each app and disable each setting.

Now the question arises, “Can we prevent this?” Yes, we can. First, we need to understand google controls most of the apps and websites that we use in our daily life. If we can cut it out from our daily usage half of the problem is already solved. Now you might ask, What are we gonna use if we don’t use Google as a search engine? Here, I introduce you to the most amazing search engine the cool kids are using these days and it’s Duck Duck Go. It’s just as effective as google but more privacy-focused. What comes next after the search engine? A browser that focuses on privacy and doesn’t steal your data. Most of us are used to using the Chrome browser. So, the next application from my list of arsenal is Brave-browser. Trust me you can not go wrong with this one. And believe me when I say it will save your time from those annoying pop-us and YouTube ads. Not only that it keeps your privacy from getting out by blocking all the sites that track your activities but also it’s convenient for being a Chromium browser; so the people who have been using Chrome like me for the better half of their lives can easily switch to this platform.

Moreover, As students, we often connect to public wifis without a second thought. Your data are vulnerable in these situations. A man-in-the-middle attack, also known as MITM, is a cyber-attack where a third-party client steals your data while your data is being shared directly between a server and a client. Next time you connect to public wifi; do use a VPN. I would suggest Proton VPN. It’s open-source software and always comes in handy. Speaking of Proton, This company also has encrypted emails which are also free to use. Proton Mail or Tutanota is great if you are sharing confidential information via email. 

In the end, these may be too much for someone who’s trying to get into securing their data and privacy, for those I’d say at least give it a shot. You may end up using all of them or might even find better options that work for you.
